Do you wonder what’s the new trend in marketing? Do you always find yourself slow by a mile when there’s a new release?

Gone are the days where consumers rely on the press or billboards to get their information. In the 21st century where information comes as soon as a few seconds, or even milliseconds via Google Search, most news we get are from digital sources, be it online via mobile applications from the press, yahoo news, or even hypebeast for your latest kick trends.

#Hashtags

You’ve seen it almost in every business’ posts on Facebook and Instagram. Why are people using hashtags? How do they even work? Fret not, here’s the explanation you’ll ever need.

Firstly, hashtags are used mainly for 3 reasons:

Attention drawing
Boost impressions
Capture new users

By drawing enough attention with hashtags, businesses are able to increase social media engagement with new and existing users. And when you have multiple posts with the same hashtags on your Instagram page, you can consider yourself a #hashtagleader in that particular hashtag!

🤔 Alright Craig, I’m listening. So, how do I create a suitable hashtag for my marketing campaign? I want an active following!

Having a hashtag will definitely get you more engagements and followings with your users than you would by not having one at all. So how?

A #hashtag is made up of a mixture of letters, numbers and even emoji with a ‘#’ sign included. Such existing popular examples on Instagram are #ThrowbackThursday or #tbt, #nofilter, #NDP2019. Anyone who clicks on your hashtag will see all kinds of posts that has been tagged by it.

Secondly, #hashtags make your posts discoverable

Boosting impressions. Hashtags are a new way for potential new users to find out about you through your posts. Do take note that your hashtag has to be related to the post. Many spam hashtags on Instagram like #like4like #followback is proven to give you new followers, but not the ones you want. These hashtags will generate bot followers that wouldn’t mean a thing for your business as you still can’t get those followers to convert.

For an existing multinational brand such as Coca-Cola, what they did right with the hashtag of #ShareACoke made sense in alignment to their marketing campaign where you could order a personalized coke with your name. This especially suited Christmas where many people would get Secret Santa gifts for one another, and Christmas is the spirit of giving. Thus, it is crucial for you to pick the right hashtag for your campaign!
